Absence of occult hepatitis B among blood donors in southern Brazil BJID
Wolff,Fernando Herz; Fuchs,Sandra Costa; Brandão,Ajacio BM.
BACKGROUND: Occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is characterized by the detection of HBV DNA in serum and/or in liver in the absence of detectable hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The reported prevalence of occult hepatitis B varies markedly among populations and according to the sensitivity of the HBV DNA assay. The aim of the present study was to describe the prevalence of occult hepatitis B among HCV-infected and non-infected blood donors in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil, using a highly sensitive real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. METHODOLOGY: Between 1995 and 1997 a sample of 178 blood donors with two positive anti-HCV ELISA tests were consecutively selected as cases, and 356 anti-HCV negative donors were selected as controls....

Estimated prevalence of immunity to poliomyelitis in the city of São Paulo, Brazil: a population-based survey BJID
Kiffer,Carlos Roberto Veiga; Conceição,Orlando Jorge; Santos,Edgar Bortholi; Sabino,Ester; Focaccia,Roberto.
OBJECTIVES: Estimate the prevalence of immunity to poliomyelitis (anti-polio antibodies) in the city of São Paulo/Brazil through a population-based survey. METHODS: A quantitative and inductive method was used to draw a representative sample of the population. Randomization and stratification (based on sex, age and residence region) was done, and 1,059 individuals were studied on a home-visit basis (structured questionnaires and blood samples). A microneutralization test was performed to detect anti-polio antibodies against serotypes 1, 2 and 3. RESULTS: The estimated prevalence of immunity to poliomyelitis was high, with 94.6% prevalence of anti-polio 1 antibodies, 98.8% anti-polio 2 and 91.9% anti-polio 3. Despite this high prevalence, there were...

Estimating HIV-1 incidence using the serologic testing algorithm for recent HIV infections at HIV counseling and testing centers in the city of São Paulo, Brazil BJID
Bassichetto,Katia Cristina; Bergamaschi,Denise Pimentel; Veras,Maria Amelia; Sucupira,Maria Cecilia Araripe; Mesquita,Fabio; Diaz,Ricardo Sobhie.
The network of HIV counseling and testing centers in São Paulo, Brazil is a major source of data used to build epidemiological profiles of the client population. We examined HIV-1 incidence from November 2000 to April 2001, comparing epidemiological and socio-behavioral data of recently-infected individuals with those with long-standing infection. A less sensitive ELISA was employed to identify recent infection. The overall incidence of HIV-1 infection was 0.53/100/year (95% CI: 0.31-0.85/100/year): 0.77/100/year for males (95% CI: 0.42-1.27/100/year) and 0.22/100/ year (95% CI: 0.05-0.59/100/year) for females. Overall HIV-1 prevalence was 3.2% (95% CI: 2.8-3.7%), being 4.0% among males (95% CI: 3.3-4.7%) and 2.1% among females (95% CI: 1.6-2.8%). Recent...

Recent HIV infection rates among HIV positive patients seeking voluntary counseling and testing centers in the metropolitan region of Recife - Pe, Brazil BJID
Cavalcanti,Ana Maria Salustiano; Brito,Ana Maria de; Salustiano,Daniela Medeiros; Lima,Kledoaldo Oliveira de; Silva,Sirleide Pereira da; Lacerda,Heloisa Ramos.
The BED capture enzyme immunoassay test makes it possible to determine whether individuals were recently infected with HIV. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the overall HIV and recent infections prevalences were determined at five Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) centers, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, Northeastern of Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among users of five VCTs in the metropolitan region of Recife between July 2007 and April 2009. Out of the individuals who tested positive for HIV, 169 were analyzed to assess the prevalence of recent infection by means of the BED-CEIA (BED-Calypte®). RESULTS: Out of 46,696 individuals tested 916 (1.96%) turned out positive for HIV infection The highest prevalence was...

Brandão,Paulo Eduardo; Cortez,Adriana; Ferreira,Fernando; Ferreira Neto,José Soares; Gregori,Fábio; Heinemann,Marcos Bryan; Homem,Valéria Stacchini Ferreira; Rodriguez,Cesar Alejandro Rosales; Jerez,José Antonio.
Rotavirus is a worldwide etiologic agent of diarrhea, responsible for large economic losses. We studied the seroprevalence of antibodies to group A rotavirus in cattle in 67 smallholder farms from Uruará municipality, using counterimmunoelectroosmophoresis with the NCDV strain as a standard antigen. Prevalence of positive smallholder farms was 95.6-100%. Significant differences were seen between age groups when the seropositivity rose from the youngest to the oldest groups and between females and males older than 1 year, when the seropositivity was higher in the first group.
